Getting Up for Fajr Prayer

The first prayer of the day...What do you do to get up early and on time for prayer?
Personally, I try the multiple alarm thing...You know, one in the room one in the living room, etc.
Just recently, I started using my cell phone regularly. It's nice 'cause it's really loud, but what can a Muslim do even more practically, according to Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) Sunnah to get up for Fajr salah on time?! How do you prepare for it the night before and what do you avoid what may hinder you accomplishing this important task? Inshaa'Allaah, please share your views and let's help each other obey Allaah in the best manner!

as salamu 'alaykum Umm Muhammad

I'm loving this blog already, dear. Sorry for not calling you btw, I'm really really sick (so is the rest of the family), alhamdulillah.

I've tried different things for waking up for fajr. I've tried the leaving the computer on and allowing the adhan to wake me up. I've tried different amounts of alarms, cell phone alarm, etc. I do think one of the most important things is having a bedtime routine. Shutting off the computer a few hours before going to bed and doing dhikr before bed has helped me a lot in the past. Waking up in the middle of the night for tahajjud or just some simple dhikr is always an encouragement to awake for fajr, but that part has been very difficult for me.

It's very difficult for me on the weekends when my husband is working because I sleep later and I wake up in the morning like a zombie. So making sure we get plenty of rest should be a priority.

Insha'Allah I'd like to try going to sleep earlier this coming weekend (no later than 11:30 insha'Allah). Maybe earlier. Remind me when we talk insha'Allah cause you know how it is easy to stay up.

Bismillaah. Peace be upon Prophet Muhammad. Wa 'alaykum salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatu, dear umm layth. Al-hamdulillaah for our friendship! Thanks so much for the encouragement. Shukran and jazakillaah for mentioning our blogs on your post and for always writing helpful posts. I'm addicted to your site and benefit from it greatly, bi idhnillaah! Thanks for the reminder to go to sleep early. I used to stay up 'cause I didn't want to miss it, but instead I just became sleep deprived and lazy during the day. Al-hamdulillaah Mumu is sleeping through the night, so I actually have a good opportunity, inshaa'Allaah, to go to sleep earlier at night!

ameen and jazaki Allahu khairan. I'm feeling better in some ways. The cold didn't hit me so hard but my throat hasn't stopped hurting at all. I just hope it isn't anything like strep throat.

I'm going to try to go to bed early tonight, insha'Allah. What time did you to bed last night huh? ; ))

I am looking to convert but my wife is not Muslim and I am worried how I will wake up for Fajr without disturbing her sleep. I do not want to put on extra pressure on the marriage and I do not want to have to sleep in another room.

Dear Anonymous,
I apologize for the delay, I have not checked my blog that frequently lately.
About your concerns...
If you haven't told your wife already amd you feel comfortable doing so, I would just explain your desire to convert to Islam so she understands your dedication/intention. She also may need to know that part of your dedication to Allaah is that you pray to Allaah at least 5 times per day. And, that the first prayer Fajr will need to be made at times when she may be sleep. Having a prayer time calendar up where she can see it, may be a good idea as well. Don't worry too much inshaa'Allaah, about disturbing her sleep. Maybe try to set one alarm in your room and another down the hall in case you have trouble getting up. Just gently remove yourself from under the covers if you are able, inshaa'Allaah and always make dua that Allaah will wake you for Fajr every morning easily with or without the alarm and that Allaah prevents your wife from feeling disturbed of her sleep, inshaa'Allaah. Amin.
Inshaa'Allaah, one day she will wake to see/hear you glorifying your Creator in the early hours and long to join you in your prayer and in this deen. May Allaah guide you, dear brother, to the best way and provide you with the best means of dealing with your family, friends and fellow Muslims.Amin.
