Nafs Challenge

Here's a list of Sunnahs and recommended acts that I'd like to incorporate as a regular practice. Please feel free to suggest any other actions that I should be keen on taking up. Many of these actions involve breaking the nafs, so I guess that's my first challenge in being consistent with the Sunnahs.

1. Pray all daily sunnah prayers
2. Use less water to make wudu and ghusl
3. Sleep less and eat less
4. Pray tahajjud
5. Say dhikrs before sunrise and sunset, after prayers, etc
6. Learn qunut for Fajr salah
7. Memorize Suratul-Kahf, last ten ayat of Surah Ali Imran, Suratul Mulk
8. Read Suratul Kahf every Friday, if possible
9. Read Suratul Mulk every night, if possible
10. Read from the Shama'il or other book on Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) every day
11. Listen to Islamic lectures everyday
12. Read Qur'an everyday if possible
13. Read from hadith everyday
14. Make istighfar at least 70 times per day
15. Recite blessings and prayers upon Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) throughout everyday
16. Be kind and attentive and respectful to my parents, spouse, child, in-laws, relatives,
friends acquaintances
17. Be more silent everyday
18. Do lots of dhikr everyday
19. Have khushoo and peace and happiness in salah
20. To yearn for salah
21. To fear Allaah alone, not to fear created beings
22. To love Allaah in the best manner
23. To put my complete trust in Allaah under all circumstances
24. To be pleased with Allaah's decree
25. To praise Allaah publically without shyness
...so much more, I gotta take a break. I look forward to your comments!

As-salamu 'alaykum,

This is a beneficial list and I found some things on it that I need to add to a similar list that I keep for myself.

My only advice would be to take care to not overwhelm yourself, so you might try to work some of the more demanding tasks on the list into your life one at a time over time.

Off the top of my head, you might want to add "Make wudu' immediately upon losing it" (or simply "Stay in a state of wudu' as much as reasonably possible").

I pray that Allah gives you tawfiq to keep up the good work!

Wasalam,

Bismillaah. Peace be upon Prophet Muhammad. As-Salaamu 'alaykum, brother. Shukran and jazaak Allaah for your encouragement, advice and dua. Thanks for the reminder about wudu...I first learned how truly special it is to keep on it at my first suhba with Sh. Nuh this past January. It was a basic requirement for the murids who were able to do this.
Question: Why is it called mere islam? Are you suggesting an Islam untainted by false additions and ideologies, traditional Islam?

Wa 'alaykumu as-salam wa rahmatullah,

Well after posting my comment, I felt maybe that I shouldn't have mentioned the point about staying in wudu' since it seemed overly obvious. I then wondered if your list might consist of only NEW things that you want to put into practice, not more basic ones that you already are...so I apologize if it came across in an offensive manner.

As far as the name of my blog, what you've mentioned is essentially the reason behind the name. Additionally, I wanted to make it clear that I'm just a "mere Muslim" and not a scholar. Please see Why "Mere Islam"? for more details...

Wasalam,

Abdurrahman

as salamu 'alaykum

Hey, have you read the articles by Shaykh Nuh on the suhba.org website under articles? I'm talking like about the adab of Islam and adab of the sunna, etc. Those are some articles that when I read really put everything I want to fix in my character into perspective.

Bismillaah. Peace be upon Prophet Muhammad. As-Salaamu 'alaykum bro and sis. Jazaak Allaah for the pointers and reminders. I had forgotten about the wudu thing and took no offense. Also, I appreciate the link and the info about suhba.org.
Umm Layth,
Inshaa'Allaah you are all doing better. Checked out the first shafi'i lesson! Also, I really love that got shafi'i thing, it looks so cool. Maybe you could do the same for "shadhili: you Nuh you love it" or "dhikr:you know you need it". silly silly and I'm still up...almost Fajr time, I did fall asleep around 9pm though, he he!
